About Us

The Red Web Foundation is an international women's organization created to raise awareness of menstruation/menopause as integral to women's health and well-being and transform attitudes that perpetuate shame and ignorance. As an educational nonprofit, The Red Web provides a supportive network of menstrual health advocates, public educational events, and comprehensive, multidisciplinary online resources. The Red Web upholds the tenet that an informed, embodied understanding of menstruation is the birthright of all women and girls, providing a powerful source of self- knowledge and a deep connection to all women.

How We Are Creating Change

The Goals of the Red Web Foundation are:

Our very long term goal is to become a generously funded Foundation which will support widespread free educational programs for women and girls of all economic and cultural backgrounds.

Why We Exist

Our members, and many others worldwide, devote countless resources toward the work of menstrual health advocacy. Yet, because menstruation is misunderstood or often times considered inconvenient in mainstream culture, quite often they do this in isolation with little societal or financial support. At the same time, many more women and girls are seeking information and guidance about their bodies and their place in this world as women and are unable to access the help they need. The Red Web Foundation was created to address these needs.

How can knowing more about the menstrual cycle change a girl’s or woman’s life?

Here is one woman’s story of life changes upon discovering the wisdom of the menstrual cycle. Author Lara Owen begins her journey "It [menstruation] caused erratic mood swings... cost money...in pads and in time away from work. ... I wasn't entirely against it. When my period came there was always a part of me that was pleased. Laura shares her journey in which she begins to look at her blood with awe, learns from a variety of teachers how the menstrual cycle is a source of power and greatest of all "This priceless piece of information, coupled with a strong instinct I had about the power of the womb, transformed my deep and largely unconscious lack of self-respect." Sabbath of Women

“When women and girls view their bodies as powerful sources of wisdom, profound healing occurs at the individual’s physical, emotional, and spiritual level.”

Brief History of The Red Web Foundation

The Red Web Foundation grew out of the work of The Menstrual Health Foundation, established by the late Tamara Slayton. In response to the prevailing negative societal attitudes about menstruation, Tamara worked for over 20 years reframing the menstrual cycle as a positive, life affirming force in women’s lives. In the last years of her life, Tamara worked closely with Kelly Rose Mason, passing on her vision and experience. Meanwhile in January 2000, Helynna Brooke, creator of First Moon Celebration Kit convened The Menstrual Millenium, a group of twenty women active in menstrual health advocacy.

In the spring of 2003, women from The Menstrual Health Foundation and from The Menstrual Millenium organized a conference. Grounded in both the women’s health movement and women spirituality studies, the conference attracted women from diverse professions: artists, medical professionals, businesswomen, academics and alternative health educators. The conference provided a forum for women to collaborate as menstrual health advocates to share resources and support each other’s efforts. Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the Weaving the Red Web conference,The Red Web Foundation was formed. It has since grown and evolved under the leadership of former Directors Kelly Rose Mason and Maura McCarley Torkildson and due to innumerable contributions from its members and friends. May the Web continue to grow and flourish...

Who We Are

Welcome to The Red Web Foundation. We are a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting a positive societal view of girls' and women's bodies and menstrual cycles, from first menstruation called menarche through menopause, thus creating physical, emotional, and spiritual well being.

Members of the Red Web Foundation form a network of women committed to promoting menstrual health in their personal and professional lives. These menstrual health advocates offer a diverse range of products, workshops, and educational materials and include artists, mental health professionals, businesswomen, moms, students, teachers, and health care providers. The leadershlip of the Foundation is all volunteer. The Foundation is committed to including a diversity of cultural views and experiences of the menstrual life-cycle. All women who have this focus in their lives are encouraged to be a part of the web. We honor individual and cultural practices of the present day and the past which promote a healthy outlook for women and society.
